Sheikh Jassim al-Haddad detained as sectarian campaign against prominent Husseini preacher grows

The Interior Ministry announced the detention of an unidentified person, while loyalist accounts are revealing details about him and mobilizing public opinion against him, suggesting a coordinated operation involving detention and online incitement.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry announced today the arrest of three members of the Islamic State terrorist group in Nineveh province who were planning terrorist attacks targeting security forces and civilians. The ministry said in a statement that the operation followed close monitoring of the members’ movements. They were hiding in a residential neighborhood in Mosul, where they were arrested without any injuries.

The statement also said security forces found weapons and ammunition in the detainees’ possession, along with explosives prepared for use in terrorist attacks. The operation is part of a series of efforts by Iraqi security forces to strengthen security and pursue Islamic State remnants, particularly amid growing concerns about renewed activity by the group in some areas.

In a related development, the commander of joint operations said security forces remain ready and have conducted preemptive operations in several areas, highlighting the importance of cooperation with citizens in reporting any suspicious movements. He said: “We are working to secure all provinces and seek to deny any opportunity to those plotting against the country’s security.”

Iraq has recently seen a marked improvement in security, but threats from some extremist groups persist, requiring continued vigilance and precautions by security forces.
